紹介してもらった詩を自分でもう一度読み返したくて、書いてみます。
アメリカ人女性作家が暖炉の火を前にして浮かんできた「空間の必要」を書いています。
Fire
What makes a fire burn
is space between the logs,
a breathing space.
Too much of a good thing,
too many logs
packed in too tight
can douse the flames
almost as surely
as a pail of water would.
So building fires
requires attention
to the spaces in between,
as much as to the wood.
When we are able to build
open spaces
in the same way
we have learned
to pile on the logs,
then we can come to see how
it is fuel, and absence of the fuel
together, that make fire possible
We only need to lay a log
lightly from time to time.
A fire
grows
simply because the space is there,
with openings
in which the flame
that knows just how it wants to burn
can find its way.

炎を燃やすのはマキの間に空間があるから。
呼吸する空間。
良いことがありすぎたり、
マキもぎゅうぎゅうにつまっていると
バケツの水がそうするように炎を消してしまう。
だから火を起こすときにはマキそのものに目を向けるのと
同じくらいにそのマキの空間にも目を向けよう。
マキを積み重ねてゆくなかで気づいたように
自分たちにも「空間」を拡げていくことが出来たら、
燃料になるものとその「空間」とを同時に見ていこう。
炎を起こせるように。
私たちは時々そのマキをそっと積んだらいい。
.炎はきらめく。
燃えたいように燃えてゆく
炎の中には開かれた空間がそこにあるだけ。.
